Not every crypto investment that goes wrong is a scam, but if you recognise this pattern, let Paucitas, an independent firm of experts, take a look: we follow the route of your money on the blockchain and set it out in a report that anyone can follow step by step. Only once there is trust does the suggestion come to invest in crypto together, through a platform or app the other person points you to. The name refers to fattening up the victim before the money disappears.

<details style="margin:0 0 10px;border:1px solid #e6d9c8;border-radius:8px;padding:12px 16px;background:#fffaf4">

How it often unfolds in practice

A woman in her fifties starts chatting on social media with a friendly man who says he works abroad. After a few weeks of daily contact he talks about his crypto investments and helps her open an account on a platform. A small first deposit grows quickly and a first withdrawal goes through. After that she puts in more and more. When she wants to withdraw a larger sum, she is told she must first pay tax or verification fees. After that the money stays out of reach and the contact cools.

This example is put together from situations we see in practice; names, amounts and details have been changed.

The platform often looks professional, with charts, a customer service desk and a balance that grows every day. In many cases that balance turns out to be no more than a number in the provider’s own records, with nothing behind it on the blockchain. Whether that is so in your case is something an investigation can establish.

</details>

Further reading: the term pig butchering and the blog how pig butchering works as a crypto scam.

Who investigates a pig butchering scam?

Paucitas investigates pig butchering cases on the facts and independently. We map out which addresses your crypto was sent to and which route the money took after that. We record this in a report that the police, your bank or a court can check. Paucitas acts as an independent investigator and records the facts.

<details style="margin:0 0 10px;border:1px solid #e6d9c8;border-radius:8px;padding:12px 16px;background:#fffaf4">

Why an independent investigation helps

After pig butchering you often no longer know what was real and what was not. An investigation gives you something solid to hold on to: it shows what actually happened to your money, separate from what the platform showed you. Sometimes the money turns out to have reached an exchange after a few steps. Sometimes part of it is still in a wallet you can access yourself. And sometimes it turns out to be a genuine investment that went differently than hoped. In every case you know where you stand afterwards.

Paucitas does all tracing itself, without tracing tools, and checks every transaction separately before it goes into the report. Paucitas does not work for an exchange or platform and has no interest in the outcome. That makes the report usable for you, your solicitor and the authorities.

</details>

Further reading: the blog a case study and what the investigation into pig butchering showed.

How do you recognise pig butchering?

There is no single sign that proves you are dealing with pig butchering. A few features do come back in many cases, though. If you recognise several of them, stop sending money for now and let someone look at it independently.

<details style="margin:0 0 10px;border:1px solid #e6d9c8;border-radius:8px;padding:12px 16px;background:#fffaf4">

Signs that often come back

The contact starts by chance or online, with someone you did not know before.

After a while the conversation moves to money, investing and the other person’s successes.

The other person points you to one platform or app and helps you set up the account.

The returns are strikingly high and rise almost every day.

A small first withdrawal works, a larger one does not.

Before a payout you must first pay tax, fees or a deposit.

There is pressure to top up quickly, for example because an opportunity is about to close.

The other person will not phone or video call, or always has a reason not to.

None of these points is proof on its own. Together they do form a pattern we see often. Paucitas can establish whether the platform you paid into really carried out transactions, or whether the balance only existed on your screen.

You can check yourself whether the FCA has warned about a firm on the FCA Warning List. If the platform is not on it, that does not tell you much: new platforms often appear faster than any list can be updated.

</details>

Further reading: the term romance scam and the blog how trust is abused in romance scams with crypto.

I am a victim of pig butchering, what should I do first?

Keep everything you have: the wallet addresses, transaction hashes, your messages with the fraudster and the details of the platform. Let Paucitas investigate and record the flow of money; with that report you can then report the fraud. The sooner an investigation starts, the better the chance that the flow of money can still be followed. Paucitas guides you through those steps and turns the findings into a file that an authority can work with.

<details style="margin:0 0 10px;border:1px solid #e6d9c8;border-radius:8px;padding:12px 16px;background:#fffaf4">

What you can keep now

the wallet addresses you sent crypto to;

transaction hashes or transaction IDs of your deposits and withdrawals;

screenshots of the platform, your balance and your withdrawal requests;

the full chat history, including messages that seem unimportant now;

bank statements showing the payments to the exchange or platform;

the name and web address of the platform and any emails from the provider.

Delete nothing and do not respond to new requests for money, however friendly or urgent they sound. If you still have access to your own wallet or exchange account, leave it as it is; that can matter for the investigation too. Missing some details?
