A deviating pattern stands out, but in itself it says nothing yet about the intention behind it.

What it may indicate

Movement that does not fit normal use can be an indication that a platform or an account is being used for something other than ordinary trading. It can equally have an explainable cause. The pattern is a reason to look, not a conclusion.

Funds came into a platform and left it almost immediately towards changing destinations. Whether that belongs to normal use or to something else can only be said after following those movements.

What is a suspicious exchange pattern?

A way in which funds move around a trading platform that deviates from the usual picture, such as funds arriving and leaving quickly or via unusual routes.

Does a deviating pattern mean something is wrong?

Not on its own. The legal qualification belongs with an authorised body or with the court, not with the report itself.

Can an ordinary trading pattern look suspicious?

Yes. Active traders and automated strategies produce patterns that deviate at first sight. That is why the wider context is always taken into account before anything is said about it.

Which data belong in a description of a pattern?

The addresses involved, the transactions with their hash and time, the amounts, and the reference the comparison was made against. Without a reference a deviation cannot be substantiated.

How a suspicious exchange pattern is weighed

A single unusual movement means little on its own. What gives a suspicious exchange pattern its weight is repetition and timing: deposits that arrive in round amounts from unrelated addresses, withdrawals that follow within minutes, or a burst of activity on an account that had been dormant for months. Each of those can have an innocent explanation, and several of them together rarely do. The assessment is therefore comparative, looking at how the account behaved before and how it behaves now.

In a file we describe the pattern in terms a reader can check rather than in conclusions. That means the amounts, the intervals, the number of counterparties and the direction of the flow, followed by what the combination suggests and what would be needed to confirm it. The confirmation almost always sits with the platform, because only it can see the customer behind an account and the device or bank details used. Naming the pattern precisely is what allows an institution to look in the right place.

External sourceEuropol describes online fraud schemes as organised operations that reach large numbers of victims at once and convert the proceeds quickly, often through accounts opened for that purpose.
