Anyone who has this code can look the payment up and check where the funds went. In an investigation the transaction hash is often the starting point: it proves that a transaction actually took place and it is the point from which the route of the coins can be traced further.

What is a transaction hash?

A transaction hash, also called a transaction ID, is a long string of letters and numbers attached to every confirmed transaction. The code is unique and never changes. You can find it in your wallet or at the exchange where you made the transfer, and you can enter it into a public blockchain explorer to see the addresses, amounts and timestamps involved.

Where do I find my transaction hash?

In the transaction history of your wallet or exchange, every transfer shows a transaction hash or transaction ID. You can copy that code and paste it into a blockchain explorer to view the details of the transaction.

Where do you find your transaction hash in a wallet?

In the transaction overview of your wallet or under the details of a payment. Often there is a link to a block explorer, where the code is visible in the address bar.

Can a transaction hash change?

Once a transaction is included in a block, the hash is fixed. A payment that has not yet been confirmed can under certain conditions be replaced, after which a different hash appears.

Is a transaction hash sensitive information?

The code is public and cannot be used to dispose of your balance. It does make your payment traceable, so share it deliberately and not in open groups.

What if you no longer have a transaction hash?

The payment can often still be found through the address you sent from or through the overview of the platform you used. If both are missing, recording becomes harder but not always impossible.

Why this reference is the backbone of a report

In a file the unique reference of a transfer does the work that an account statement does elsewhere. It fixes one movement, on one network, at one moment, and anyone can look it up independently for years afterwards. That is why it belongs in every line of a report that makes a factual claim: the amount, the sender, the receiver and the time can all be verified from it without asking us or anyone else for access. A finding without such a reference is an assertion, and it will be read as one.

Two practical points come up constantly. First, the same reference can look different depending on the network and the explorer you use, and a truncated version copied from a screenshot is often unusable. Copy it whole, from the source. Second, a reference proves that a transfer happened, not who instructed it. Attribution of an address to a person sits with the party that holds customer records, which is why our reports separate the movement, which is public, from the identity behind it, which is not.

External sourceThe UK national fraud reporting service explains how to report suspicious activity and which details make a report actionable, including references for the payments involved.
