Whoever holds the key can move the coins, regardless of who the owner is. In cases of fraud or theft the central question is often who had or gained access to the key. The loss or handover of a private key is therefore a crucial moment in many cases.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>What is a private key?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">A private key is a secret code used to sign transactions from your wallet. It is comparable to the key to a safe: without it no one can get in, but anyone who copies it has as much power as you do. A private key should always remain secret and must never be shared with anyone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>What is the difference between a private key and a seed phrase?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">A seed phrase is a series of words from which your private keys can be derived and restored. The private key itself signs the individual transactions. Both must stay secret, because either one lets someone move your coins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>What is the difference between a private key and a public address?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">You can share the public address freely in order to receive. The private key gives the authority to send and belongs to you alone. The key cannot be derived from an address.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>Can a private key be blocked?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">No. There is no party that can withdraw a key or make it invalid. The only option is to move the balance to a wallet with a new key, provided you still have access.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>Who legitimately asks for a private key?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">Nobody. Platforms, banks, the police and investigation firms do not need the key. Treat every request for it as an attempt at fraud.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>What can you record if a key has been misused?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">The moment of the first unexpected transaction, the addresses and hashes involved, and the events before it such as a message, a download or a connection with an unknown application.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pterm-block\">\n<h2>What control means in a file<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">In an investigation the decisive question is not who owns a balance on paper but who could sign for it. That is why the key material is treated as the boundary of everything else: whoever has it can move funds at any moment, and whoever has lost it cannot move them at all, regardless of what any document says. Once you understand that, a great deal of what happens after a theft becomes predictable, including the long quiet periods followed by sudden transfers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pterm-p\">Demonstrating control does not require handing anything over, and no reputable party will ask you to. A signed message from the address, a matching device, or a consistent history of use over time are all accepted ways to show that an address belongs to you. We never request key material or a recovery phrase, and we say so in writing before an investigation starts, because a request like that is itself one of the most common opening moves in a scam.
