Mixer

A mixer is a service that combines crypto of different origins and then pays it out again in a new composition. The purpose attributed to it is making a route harder to follow. Whether its use in a specific case hides anything unintended cannot be read from the service itself.

What it may indicate

Passing through a mixer can be an indication that someone wants to blur a route, but it need not mean anything. Sometimes it is used for privacy reasons. What it really is only emerges from the wider investigation of the surrounding transactions.

While following a flow of funds, the trail enters a mixer and comes out again in a different composition. That makes following harder, but not always impossible. The pattern can be a reason for further investigation.

What does a crypto mixer do?

A mixer combines crypto of different origins and pays it out in a new composition, which makes a route harder to follow.

Is using a mixer always suspicious?

No. It can be used for privacy reasons as well. Whether a specific case is relevant only emerges from investigating the surrounding transactions.
