Police report
What is a police report?
A police report is an official notification to the police that a criminal offence has taken place. You describe what happened and provide the evidence you have, such as transaction hashes, screenshots and messages. The report is no guarantee that the money will return, but it is a necessary basis for a criminal investigation.
What do I need to file a report about crypto fraud?
It helps to gather everything that supports your account beforehand: the transaction hashes and wallet addresses, screenshots of conversations, emails, and details of the platform or person who approached you. The more complete your file, the better the police can assess the case.
Is there any point in filing a police report about crypto fraud?
Yes. Without a report the case formally does not exist and data cannot be requested from platforms. Reports from different injured parties also sometimes come together.
What do you take with you when filing a report?
A chronological overview of your payments with amounts, dates, addresses and transaction hashes, plus the communication in which the offer was made.
Can you file a report if the provider is abroad?
Yes. You file in the Netherlands regardless of where the counterparty is located. Where the provider is established does matter for later steps towards a platform.
How long after the event can you still file a report?
There is no practical moment after which it becomes pointless. Blockchain transactions remain in place, so an older case can still be examined. Filing sooner does keep more of the surrounding evidence available.
