Case study: a transaction followed from victim to exchange

Paucitas is an independent expert firm in the Netherlands that investigates investment fraud and crypto fraud, establishes the origin and legitimacy of crypto assets and prepares expert reports for legal proceedings and compliance.

In short

This case shows a transaction traced to an exchange: a victim’s payment ran through a chain of intermediate addresses to a deposit address at an exchange abroad. Every step was recorded so it can be checked. Whether your own case can be traced the same way depends on the route your money took.

Paucitas is an independent expert firm in the Netherlands that investigates investment fraud and crypto fraud, in hundreds of cases a year. Paucitas follows every route itself, step by step. Sometimes the money turns out to be within reach, sometimes it sits with a platform, and sometimes it turns out not to be a scam at all.

In a nutshell

Money that disappears via the blockchain leaves traces. In this case, those traces led to an exchange. That is where the public route ends and the next steps begin. Paucitas records the route so that the police, your bank or a solicitor can take it further.

You sent money to a platform that turns out not to exist, and you want to know where it went. That is an awful feeling, and completely understandable. This case shows what such a route looks like in practice, from the first payment to the point where the money enters an exchange.

If you mainly want to know how tracing to an exchange works in general, read stolen crypto traced to an exchange.

How was this transaction traced to an exchange and deposit address?

The victim had invested in a trading platform that showed a nicely growing balance. When he tried to withdraw money, it did not work. He was first asked to pay another sum. That is when he came to Paucitas.

The investigation started with his own payment. From there, the money was followed from address to address. Each step was recorded with date, amount and transaction hash. The result is a chain reconstruction: a route that someone else can check for themselves.

Which route did the money take?

Broadly speaking, the route had five parts:

  1. Starting point: the payment from the victim’s address.
  2. First receiving address: the platform did not hold on to the money but passed it on almost immediately.
  3. Splitting: through a chain of intermediate addresses, the amount was split into smaller parts.
  4. Collection address: after a few steps, the separate flows came together again.
  5. Cash-out point: from that address, the money went to a deposit address at an exchange abroad.

Splitting and merging makes a route confusing, but not invisible. Every step stays on the blockchain. It does take patience and precision to put them in the right order, especially when there are dozens of addresses in between.

We see this pattern often. It does not mean every route looks like this. Sometimes a route is shorter, sometimes money moves across several networks or through a mixer. How that works out is covered in tracing crypto across wallets and mixers.

What happens at the cash-out point?

At the cash-out point the money arrives at an address belonging to an exchange. There it leaves the public blockchain. What happens next, such as a conversion or a payout to a bank account, can no longer be seen on the blockchain.

For the victim this was an important moment. For the first time he could see in black and white where his money had gone, instead of just a balance on a screen that turned out to be false.

That is exactly why this point matters so much. It is the end of the visible route and the start of the next steps. An exchange works with customer data. Whether and to whom it releases that data is decided by the law and the competent authorities.

What could the victim do with the recorded route?

He now had a report anyone can follow and understand step by step. It showed where his money had gone and what the next steps were. In a case of fraud, one of those steps is reporting it to Action Fraud or, in Scotland, to Police Scotland, and the Paucitas report is then a strong attachment that sets everything out fully and clearly. A solicitor can use the same route to assess whether a civil step makes sense. Which body does what is explained in institutions and crypto investment fraud.

Paucitas does not promise that money will come back. But after an investigation you know where it went, and that often brings peace of mind and direction. What is realistic is covered in the chance of seeing stolen crypto again.

An example from practice

This case is built from situations we come across in practice. The victim, amounts, addresses and times have been changed so that nobody can be identified. The method is the same as in a real investigation.

Paucitas takes privacy very seriously and never shares clients’ personal details. This is a composite example: names, amounts and details have been changed. The situation is one we see in practice.

What Paucitas does for you

Paucitas looks into everything for you: the transactions, the route of the money, the parties and platforms and the documents. Paucitas also reads through all the conversations, emails and other communication, so you get the full picture: a timeline and where all the money went, step by step. Paucitas does all tracing itself, without tracing tools. That way it becomes clear how far the route is established and where uncertainty begins. A similar case is described in the stolen bitcoin case.

Frequently asked questions about tracing a transaction to an exchange

Short answers to the questions we are asked most often.

Can Paucitas trace my payment to an exchange too?

Paucitas can often do that, although every route is different. In a free intake we look at your payments and tell you honestly what can be traced.

Can an exchange see who received the money?

Paucitas explains: an exchange works with customer data. Whether it releases that data, and to whom, is decided by the law and the competent authorities. The report shows what the next steps are, for example through the police, your bank or a solicitor.

Who investigates missing USDT or USDC payments?

Paucitas also traces stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, on the network they were sent on. Feel free to get in touch and we will take a look with you.

What can I do with the Paucitas report?

Paucitas shows in the report whether money is still available or where it went, and what the next steps are. In a case of fraud, it is a strong attachment to your police report that sets everything out fully and clearly.

Will I get my money back if the transaction has been traced to an exchange?

Paucitas: that depends on your situation. If you still have access to your own wallet or account holding funds, there may still be options. If everything has been sent to the fraudsters, the picture is different. That cannot be judged from a distance. Paucitas first looks at your situation and tells you honestly what is and is not possible. Be careful with anyone who promises in advance that your money will come back. In doubt? Contact Paucitas and you will know where you stand.

Your own situation
