WhatsApp or Telegram investment group: genuine tips or a scam?
Author: Simcha Schrijver
In brief
A WhatsApp or Telegram investment group often starts in a friendly way: free tips, a helpful assistant and members sharing their profits. After a while you are pointed to an app or platform of their own and asked to invest.
Paucitas sees in practice that such a group can be very convincing, precisely because it is full of enthusiastic members. Whether it really is a scam is not always clear straight away. Paucitas finds out for you.
Unsure about a group, or have you already sent money? Contact Paucitas. An initial conversation comes with no obligation.
Put simply
A genuine investment firm will not add you to a chat group without asking and will not promise fixed returns. If you receive tips like these, take a calm look at who you are dealing with first. Let Paucitas take a look with you.
You are added to a WhatsApp group, or you click on an advert and end up in a Telegram channel. A well-known name sits at the top, there are hundreds of members and tips appear every day. An assistant sends you a personal message and helps you get started. The first small profit looks real. It happens regularly, including to people who have invested sensibly for years.

How does a WhatsApp investment group scam work?
The FCA warns that fraudsters increasingly reach people through social media and messaging apps. They lure people in with adverts or add them to groups on WhatsApp, Telegram or other apps without asking, then share supposedly exclusive tips, often in the name of a well-known investor, a bank or even a regulator. Some of the members may not be real participants at all, but part of the group itself, posting screenshots of profits and reacting enthusiastically. After a while you are asked to invest through an app or platform of their own, often in crypto. On that platform your balance appears to grow, until you try to withdraw.
Which signs may point to a scam?
Not every investment group is a scam. There are, however, signs that may point to one:
- You were added to the group without asking.
- A fixed or very high return is promised, sometimes per day or per week.
- You feel time pressure: the chance is only there today or for the first members.
- You are asked to install an unknown app or deposit money on a platform you do not know.
- An assistant or coach contacts you personally and keeps pushing.
- When you try to withdraw, you are first asked to pay tax, fees or a deposit.
Do you recognise one or more of these points? That does not automatically mean you have been scammed. It is a good reason to have it checked before you go any further.
Why do scammers use a group rather than a single message?
In a group, a decision feels less lonely. When hundreds of others take part and show their profits, it feels safe. That sense of belonging is exactly what makes the group so convincing. The move to crypto is no coincidence either: a transfer on the blockchain cannot simply be reversed. Even so, the money does not vanish without a trace. Every transaction leaves a trail, and that trail can be followed.
Already invested through such a group?
Stay calm and do not pay in any more, even if you are asked for fees or tax before a withdrawal. Keep everything: the group, the chat messages, the name of the app or website, proof of payment and the wallet addresses you sent money to. It is better not to leave the group straight away, so the messages are kept. That is exactly the material Paucitas works with.
Paucitas does more than look at transactions. Paucitas also goes through all chat messages, e-mails and documents, builds a timeline and maps step by step where the money went. The result is one complete picture of what happened. Contact Paucitas if you want to know what is possible in your situation.
What can you do with the Paucitas report?
The report shows whether money is still available, or where it went, and what the next steps could be. Sometimes the money turns out to have reached an exchange, where the balance may still be identifiable. Sometimes you still have access to a wallet of your own. And sometimes it turns out not to be a scam at all. If it is a scam, you can report it to Report Fraud, or to Police Scotland if you live in Scotland; the Paucitas report is then a strong attachment that sets everything out completely and clearly.

Frequently asked questions about WhatsApp investment groups
Is every investment group on WhatsApp or Telegram a scam?
Paucitas sees that not every group is a scam, but many are, especially groups where people are added without asking and fixed returns are promised. If in doubt, check the FCA Register to see whether the firm is authorised, and have it looked at calmly.
The group uses the name of a well-known investor. Can it still be a scam?
Paucitas sees that scammers often misuse well-known names, banks and even regulators to build trust. A familiar name therefore proves nothing. The genuine firm will not add you to a chat group without asking.
Can I get my money back?
Paucitas: it depends on your situation. If you still have access to a wallet or account of your own that holds funds, there are sometimes still options. If everything was sent to the scammers, it is a different story. That cannot be judged from a distance. Paucitas first looks at your situation and tells you honestly what is and is not possible. Be careful with parties that promise in advance that your money will come back. In doubt? Contact Paucitas and you will know where you stand.
What should I keep if I was in such a group?
Paucitas recommends keeping everything: the group and chat messages, the name of the app or website, proof of payment, screenshots and the wallet addresses. The more complete it is, the better Paucitas can work out what happened.
How quickly can Paucitas take a look?
Paucitas can be reached by phone 24/7. Through the form you will hear from us within 1 to 3 hours. An investigation usually takes from the same day to about two weeks, depending on the case.
