Is there reliable help with restoring access to a wallet?
By S.E. (Simcha) Schrijver, blockchain investigator at Paucitas
What Paucitas does
Reliable help is recognisable by the way the question is handled. A firm that asks first what data you have, quotes a fixed amount, and puts in writing which routes were tested is working on facts. A firm that promises access, asks for a percentage of the balance or presses for payment today is not.
We test the wallet and the data, then describe per route what it requires and whether that condition is met. The answer is sometimes short and negative, and that is still an answer worth having.
Reliable help restoring wallet access shows itself in three signs: the firm asks what data you have before it quotes, it charges a fixed amount rather than a share of the balance, and it puts in writing which routes were tested and what each required. A party that promises access or presses for payment today fails all three.
What you supply
You supply the wallet address, the type of wallet and the version, the data you still have and documents showing your ownership. The step most often underestimated is stopping payments to parties that already promised access: we record those payments, because in practice they often make up the largest part of the loss.
Bring the type and version of the wallet software or the device, the address, and whatever partial data you hold. If a previous firm sent you a report, include it: reading what was already tested avoids paying twice for the same conclusion.
What you receive
You receive a record with the state of the wallet, the data that were tested and a sober description of the remaining technical options. Nothing in it is phrased as an expectation, because an expectation is what led most of our clients to lose money a second time.
For an international reader one more sign is worth adding. A sound firm never takes custody of your funds and never asks for a complete recovery phrase. Any work that requires a signature should happen on your own device, under your own control, with us describing the step rather than performing it.
The record also states the balance on the address on a given date and the transactions established, so you have a dated snapshot of the wallet regardless of what the routes turn out to allow. Nothing in it is phrased as an expectation, because an expectation is what led most of our clients to lose money a second time.
How to get started
You contact us with a short description of your wallet and of what you still have. We answer with a plain assessment of whether an investigation makes sense. Use the contact page and keep your recovery words to yourself.
If you have already paid a party that promised access, bring those payments. They are traced as well, and they are frequently relevant for a police report or for a conversation with your bank.
What is technically possible depends on the data that exist. Access to a wallet can never be promised in advance.
