Is my crypto investment a scam? How to check it yourself

In short
If you doubt whether your crypto investment is a scam, you can largely check that yourself with five concrete checks before you decide to have an investigation done.
- The five self-checks deliver a substantiated suspicion, not conclusive proof.
- If a check points to something that is not right, for example a platform that turns out not to exist, that justifies an investigation.
- Paucitas establishes the facts with an independent investigation, so that a suspicion becomes verifiable.
Whether your crypto investment is a scam, you can largely test yourself with five checks: the licence of the provider, the verifiability of the platform, the promised returns, the possibility of withdrawing your money and the request for sensitive data. This self-checklist delivers a suspicion, and an independent investigation by Paucitas turns that suspicion into facts. You can read more background in our pillar on how investigation into crypto fraud works.
In this blog you go through the five checks step by step, so that you know what to look out for and when doubt weighs heavily enough to act on it. We consistently maintain the distinction between what you can see yourself and what can only be established with investigation.
A self-checklist shows whether there is reason for doubt; only an independent investigation establishes whether a platform actually exists and where your money went.
Is my crypto investment a scam?
Whether your crypto investment is a scam can rarely be said at a single glance, but you can form a substantiated suspicion with five concrete checks before you have an investigation done. It is then not about a judgement on guilt, but about visible signals: is the provider right, does the platform really exist, are the promises realistic, can you get your money back and is data requested that no one ought to ask for. Forms of investment fraud can often be recognised by a combination of these signals, for example with a fake crypto platform that looks professional but on enquiry turns out to be verifiable nowhere.
Which five checks can you do yourself before you start an investigation?
You can carry out five checks yourself that together show whether there is reason for doubt about your crypto investment. Go through them in this order:
- Check the licence and the warning list. Find out whether the provider is in the public register of the AFM and whether the platform actually appears on the warning list. A provider of crypto services that targets the Dutch market ought, under the European rules, to be findable in the register; if it is absent there, or appears on the warning list, that is a weighty signal.
- Verify whether the platform really exists. Search for a company name, a registration with the Chamber of Commerce, a real address and independent mentions outside the platform’s own website. A service provider that is only reachable via chat or an app and cannot be found anywhere else may be a platform that turns out not to exist.
- Test the promised returns and the pressure. Weigh whether the promised return is realistic and whether you are put under time pressure to deposit quickly or more. Guaranteed high returns and insistence on depositing further are characteristic of a boiler room, in which salespeople keep working on you by telephone or via chat.
- Try to withdraw your money. Request a small withdrawal and note whether it is actually paid out or whether suddenly new costs, deposits or taxes are raised that you would first have to pay. A withdrawal becoming unreachable is one of the clearest signals.
- Watch for the request for sensitive data. Be alert when someone wants your recovery phrase, private key or access to your screen, because that is never needed for a legitimate service and is a classic hallmark of phishing. Paucitas never asks of its own accord for your recovery phrase or private key. If you need help reading out or recovering your wallet, we guide you fully in that, without our having to view those data ourselves.
These five checks you can go through without help and without cost. Together they give you a picture, but they do not yet form proof.
When does doubt justify an investigation?
Doubt justifies an investigation as soon as one or more of the five checks point to something that is not right and you cannot work it out yourself. If the provider turns out not to be in the register, a withdrawal does not succeed, or the trail of your money leads to an address you do not recognise, that is the point at which searching yourself usually does not help further. Also with a suspicion of follow-up fraud, where a party offers to retrieve your lost deposit in exchange for payment, further investigation is wise; this pattern is known as a recovery scam. At such moments Paucitas maps the transactions and establishes independently what factually happened.
What is the difference between a suspicion and proof?
A suspicion is a substantiated suspicion on the basis of signals you see yourself, while proof consists of facts that have been established verifiably and that a third party can verify. The five self-checks deliver precisely that first thing: a suspicion that something is not right. They do not yet say with certainty where your money went or who is behind it. An independent investigation by Paucitas differs from that essentially: it records every transaction and every transaction hash and traces the route to a verifiable point, so that a suspicion turns into facts that hold up. This way you know not only that there was reason for doubt, but also what demonstrably happened.
What can an investigation by Paucitas establish here and what not?
An investigation can factually establish along which addresses and to which service provider your money flowed, but it gives no judgement on guilt and does not promise that assets come back. Paucitas uses no automated analysis software, in any role. The investigation is done manually on the basis of independent, publicly accessible blockchain software. Every transaction and every transaction hash is verified one by one before it is included in a report. Clear limits apply here:
- Paucitas gives no tax or legal advice.
- Paucitas makes no promise about the outcome of an investigation.
- With mixers or privacy-focused networks the chain cannot always be followed in full; in that case it is explicitly stated to which point the route stands established.
What can you do yourself and when is that not enough?
You can carry out the five checks yourself, keep screenshots and payment proofs and secure the communication with the platform. That often suffices to determine whether your doubt is well-founded and whether you want to look further. It usually does not suffice once your money has flowed on via multiple addresses or an exchange, when you can no longer follow the route yourself, or when you need an independent overview for a report or a conversation with your bank. At that point Paucitas takes over and records the course of your money traceably.
What do the AFM do, and where does the work of Paucitas begin?
The AFM keeps a public register of licensed providers and a warning list, registers reports and gives general information about fraud. At the AFM you can therefore check whether a provider or platform has the required licence or registration, something which under the European rules applies to the provider of crypto services and not something on which the AFM passes an individual judgement for you. There the work of Paucitas begins: where the supervisor keeps a register, Paucitas maps the factual route of your money and records it verifiably in a report that you can then use yourself in a report or procedure.
What is in the report and how long does it take?
The report records per section what was factually observed, which sources were consulted and how the route of your money runs, so that a third party can verify it. A report can contain, among other things, the following sections: reason and assignment description, question, scope, starting points, supplied data, consulted sources, working method in outline, verification and quality assurance, reservations and limitations, findings per section, chronological overview, analysis and coherence, conclusion, statement of independence and appendices. Not every report contains all sections; the layout is tailored to the purpose.
An investigation by Paucitas takes, depending on the size of the file and the urgency, between a working day and two weeks. A rush report can be delivered within a working day and in exceptional cases the same day. A regular investigation is usually ready within three working days. For files with many transactions, multiple wallets or missing history, the turnaround time rises to around two weeks.
Supply of data is done digitally or at the office. Per case a supply list is provided stating which data are needed. Where necessary Paucitas guides the collection and supply of these. Paucitas is an expertise firm for cryptocurrency and blockchain. Investigation is our daily practice: by now hundreds of files have been handled, ranging from individual cases to investigations for lawyers, authorities and companies.
If you doubt whether your investment is a scam and cannot work it out yourself, Paucitas will look with you in a free intake at what is needed and realistic in your case.

Frequently asked questions about checking a crypto investment
How do I check myself whether a crypto investment is a scam?
You check yourself whether a crypto investment is a scam with five steps: check the licence and the warning list of the AFM, verify whether the platform really exists, test the promised returns and the pressure, try a small withdrawal and watch for requests for sensitive data. Together those checks give a substantiated suspicion. For certainty about where your money went, an independent investigation is needed.
Where do I do a scam check of a crypto platform?
A scam check of a crypto platform begins with the public register and the warning list of the AFM and with checking whether the platform has a verifiable company name, registration and address. If that information is missing, it may be a platform that turns out not to exist. If doubt remains, Paucitas maps the facts with an independent investigation.
How do I know whether my crypto investment is still legitimate?
You recognise doubt about the legitimacy of a crypto investment by signals such as a provider that is not in the register, guaranteed high returns, pressure to deposit more and a withdrawal that suddenly does not succeed. Each of those signals on its own is not yet proof. Together they form a suspicion that justifies an independent investigation.
Can I check my crypto investment myself?
Yes, you can check your crypto investment yourself with the five self-checks and by keeping payment proofs and communication. That often suffices to determine whether your doubt is well-founded. Once your money has flowed on via multiple addresses or you need an independent overview, Paucitas takes over.
