Crypto lost to phishing or a hack: what can still be done?

In brief
Crypto lost to phishing or a hack does not automatically mean everything is gone, but the odds of doing something about it depend on what factually happened: whether you only lost access, or whether your funds were actually siphoned off to another address.
- Crypto lost to phishing or a hack puts you on one of two paths: losing access is something different from funds that have been siphoned away. Paucitas independently maps what exactly happened and where the coins went, based on the transactions on the blockchain.
- If you lose access to a wallet you lawfully own, we factually examine whether restoring access is possible; for siphoned funds we follow the flow of money to its endpoint. We never promise that stolen or lost crypto will be retrieved and remain neutral about that.
- A free intake makes clear within a single conversation what is feasible in your situation and what is not.
Crypto lost to phishing often starts in a very ordinary way. You clicked a link in what looked like an email from Ledger, entered your details, and a short while later your wallet was empty. The first question that comes up is almost always the same: can my crypto still be recovered after phishing or a hack? The honest answer begins with a distinction that many victims overlook in the first hour, and that determines everything that can follow.
Crypto lost to phishing: what actually happened?
Anyone who loses crypto to phishing usually loses it through one moment of deception: with phishing you are tricked into handing over the key yourself. A common example: an email that looks like a message from Ledger warns that your wallet must be “verified”. The link leads to a fake page where you enter your seed phrase. At that moment the attacker has everything needed to empty your wallet. Within minutes the funds move to an address that is not yours. General information about this form of fraud is available on the government page about cybercrime.
It is important to know that a trustworthy party will never ask for your seed phrase or private keys. Ledger does not do this, your exchange does not do this, and Paucitas does not do this either. Any message that does ask for it is a sign of fraud.
Access lost or funds siphoned: the difference that determines everything
After an incident, most situations fall into two categories, and the distinction determines which path is realistic.
Access lost
You have lost access to a wallet that is still yours: a forgotten password, a damaged backup file, a seed phrase that is no longer complete. The coins are still on your own address. In that case we factually examine whether restoring access is technically possible, exclusively on a wallet you lawfully own. Sometimes that is possible, sometimes not; it depends on what data is still available.
Funds siphoned
The coins have been moved to an address that is not yours, as in the phishing case above. Here access is not the problem, but the destination. We then follow the flow of money: from your address to the receiving address, and from there onward, often towards an exchange or via intermediary steps. We call this tracing the transaction. It produces a traceable picture of where the funds went.
Can my hacked crypto still be recovered?
Whether crypto lost to phishing can still be retrieved depends on the route the funds took, not on how quickly you respond.
Whether you lost crypto to phishing or to a hack, this is the core question, and the honest answer is: it depends on the type of incident and what the investigation finds. Tracing siphoned crypto does not mean the coins automatically come back. A substantiated, traceable report can, however, form the basis for a police report, for a request to an exchange, or for a legal step via your lawyer.
So be alert to parties promising “guaranteed recovery for a fee”. Real recovery services that guarantee access or return do not exist; such a promise is in fact a hallmark of follow-up fraud, in which victims lose money a second time. Paucitas is an expertise firm for blockchain investigation and stays neutral on the question of whether assets return.
The first 24 hours: what you record yourself
Whether you have lost access or see funds flowing away, the first hours mainly determine how complete the later investigation can be. Not because speed forces recovery, because it does not, but because good documentation prevents usable traces from fading. Note the wallet address the coins were on, the transaction ID of the suspicious movement if you see it, and the time at which you noticed the incident. Keep the original email or message through which the phishing arrived, including sender and links, and take screenshots before you delete anything.
Do immediately change the passwords and recovery codes of accounts that may have been exposed, and move any remaining balance to a new, clean wallet whose keys only you control. Do not share your seed phrase with anyone. Together these details form the starting material with which an investigation can reconstruct the flow of money; the more complete that material, the further an analysis can go.
What an exchange can and cannot do
If traced funds end up at an exchange, there is often a lead, because an exchange identifies customers and can, under conditions, cooperate with an investigation or a legal request. That does not mean an exchange freezes or reverses funds on your request alone. That usually requires a substantiated file and, in most cases, a step via the police or your lawyer.
That is precisely where the value of a traceable report lies: it shows that your funds demonstrably ended up at a specific address or platform, so that the exchange or the authority can act on facts instead of on an unsubstantiated report. Whether that ultimately leads to a return depends on factors beyond our control; we deliver the factual substantiation, not a promise about the outcome.
What Paucitas concretely does
We start with a free intake in which we map your situation: what happened, which addresses and transactions are known, and whether it concerns loss of access or siphoned funds. On that basis we map the transactions on the blockchain and draw up a clear, traceable report. That report is the link that helps you further towards a police report, a notification to an exchange or a step via your lawyer.
If you want to take the very first steps, read how you can have your stolen bitcoin traced as a first step. For the full picture of theft, tracing and investigation, our pillar gathers everything about tracing stolen crypto in one place. What the underlying transactions exactly reveal, you can read in our piece on what a wallet investigation after theft uncovers.

Which Dutch firm investigates lost or stolen crypto?
Paucitas is a Dutch firm that independently investigates lost or stolen crypto. We use the blockchain to map what happened and where the funds went, without promising recovery. This always starts with a free intake.
Who can help me trace my stolen crypto in the Netherlands?
To trace stolen crypto in the Netherlands you can turn to an independent blockchain investigation firm such as Paucitas. We follow the transaction from your address to its endpoint and record this in a traceable report. That report supports a police report or a step taken through your lawyer.
How do you trace stolen Bitcoin via the blockchain?
Stolen Bitcoin is traced by following the transactions from the compromised address step by step across the public blockchain. Every movement is visible, including towards an exchange or via intermediary addresses. This produces a factual picture of the route the coins took.
Is it possible to trace lost crypto without recovery being guaranteed?
Yes, tracing and recovering are two different things: mapping the route is often possible, but return is never guaranteed. Paucitas provides the investigation and the substantiation; whether assets actually return depends on factors beyond our control.
What can a blockchain expert do and not do with stolen crypto?
A blockchain expert can establish what happened, follow the flow of funds and record it with substantiation, but cannot retrieve coins from a stranger’s address themselves. Anyone guaranteeing that for a fee is almost always a follow-up scammer. Paucitas stays within what is technically and factually demonstrable.
Which firm follows a crypto transaction to an exchange?
Paucitas follows crypto transactions up to the point where they reach an exchange, as that often provides a lead for further steps. An exchange may cooperate with an investigation or legal request under certain conditions. Tracing up to that point is exactly what this blog describes.
Does Paucitas do manual blockchain investigation rather than off-the-shelf tools?
Paucitas delivers tailored investigation rather than just a software export, because every case has its own route and context. We combine transaction analysis with a readable substantiation. This makes the report usable for a police report and legal follow-up.
How does tracing a suspicious crypto transaction work?
Tracing a suspicious transaction starts at the address involved and follows each subsequent movement on the blockchain. We distinguish whether it concerns loss of access or siphoned funds, as this blog explains. The result is a traceable overview of the flow of funds.
